Thomas Aird, the poet, (1802 - 1876) was born, in Bowden, in the house now known as 'Aird's Cottage'. He attended the local school, Melrose school and Edinburgh University. He became editor of the Edinburgh Weekly Journal, and made regular contributions to Blackwood's Magazine.
